Book Review: 'People Over Profit' by Dale Partridge - An Entrepreneur Must Read!
Over the years I’ve filled my library with inspiring books by incredible minds and talented entrepreneurs and I reference them often in my career. One book in particular I continue to cite over and over is “People Over Profit.” The book’s message is based on a beautifully simple concept that if you live and work with the value of truth and treating people well, rather than with a focus on revenue, you will ultimately be far more successful.
This concept has inspired the core values of TFC. Even more so, coming from a for-profit corporate environment initially, when building TFC, it was important to me that we create an agency for brands and businesses, where the goal is never to sell products but to provide the best services to fit their needs and reach their goals. I also wanted to ensure we were working with progressive brands, forward-thinking businesses, and hopefully encourage businesses to better themselves. And lastly, I wanted to cultivate a work environment of positivity, encouragement, kindness, and progress.
‘People Over Profit’ has had a significant impact on my journey and has played a crucial role in shaping my perspective on business and success. It has provided me with valuable insights and guidance on the importance of prioritizing people and ethics over mere financial gain.
Partridge's dedication to promoting ethical and people-centered business practices has been a great source of inspiration. His work encourages the focus on building meaningful and sustainable relationships and to always place the well-being of individuals and communities at the forefront of business endeavors. "People Over Profit" deserves credit and recognition for helping TFC navigate our path to success with a strong ethical compass and a commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
"People Over Profit," delivers a compelling message about the shifting landscape of business and the importance of placing people over profit. Partridge, the Founder of Sevenly and a seasoned entrepreneur, draws on extensive experience to challenge conventional corporate behavior.
In the book, Partridge highlights the need for a fundamental shift in business paradigms, emphasizing that the system is broken, spanning various industries from healthcare to fast food. He introduces the concept of "The 4 Eras of Organizational Behavior" – The Honest Era, The Efficient Era, The Deceptive Era, and The Apologetic Era, showcasing how even well-established companies like McDonald's, Ford, and Wal-Mart started with a focus on quality and customer care.
One key insight is that businesses, particularly startups, should adopt a "people over profit" ethos, inspired by the example of companies like Patagonia, REI, and Chick-Fil-A. Partridge cites Sevenly's approach as a model for this new system, where principles like paying designers generously and donating a substantial portion of profits to charity are at the forefront.
Among the book's intriguing insights, Partridge discusses the history and evolution of corporate giants like Ford, which introduced the 40-hour work week for better work-life balance, and Wal-Mart, whose quest for lower prices eventually displaced local businesses with higher quality products. He also examines McDonald's transformation from a company focused on real, locally-sourced ingredients to one driven by cost-cutting, leading to a decline in quality and customer service.
"Truth Wins" and "Transparency Frees" are chapters in the book that challenge the prevailing culture of concealing harsh truths and provide an alternative vision of complete openness, with only trade secrets remaining confidential.
"Own Your Failures" is another significant concept introduced by Partridge, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and the willingness to acknowledge personal shortcomings. By admitting that there is room for improvement, individuals and entrepreneurs can grow and evolve.
"People Over Profit" offers valuable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs and individuals interested in reshaping the business landscape. It’s a highly recommended read by TFC and our founder, Heather Butler, as it offers a unique perspective into the need for a people-focused approach in the business world and provides a roadmap for achieving success while maintaining a commitment to values and authenticity.
